![]() If you’d like to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos this year, I’ve got some great ideas for you. Plus there’s delicious food and drink involved. What do I love about the holiday? Well, not only do I love learning about other cultures and their traditions – but I also love the bright colors and the sugar skulls ( calaveras) that people use in the crafts surrounding Day of the Dead. It’s definitely about celebrating lives lost rather than mourning. Potential ways to participate include building altars ( ofrendas) for dead relatives, setting up special decorations in honor of them, and visiting their graves to burn candles or leave offerings. This day commemorates the lives of loved ones who have died and is characterized by lively, colorful celebrations! While it is mostly celebrated in Mexico, it has become popular in other parts of the world in recent years. Just fill in the form below to access your copy of the Dia De Los Muertos Coloring Book.Day of the Dead (also known as Dia de Los Muertos) is a holiday celebrated on November 1st – 2nd each year, right after Halloween. ![]() Also special shout-out to The Parent Trap-that soundtrack has some bangers on it. I’ve always been a huge fan of The Graduate soundtrack. Sufjan Steven’s music in Call Me by Your Name is absolutely perfect and elevates that film so much. I have so much respect for the care and attention to detail that he put towards the Baby Driver soundtrack. Edgar Wright absolutely kills it with all of his films. ND: There are too many that come to mind. What film has the best soundtrack in cinema history? It’s just one of those albums that is a masterpiece front to back. ![]() I was listening to that on repeat while color grading the movie. Besides all of the amazing music that we put in the film, I really got into this album Cellar Door by Graveyard Club. I have a whole catalog of stills from various films that I’m constantly adding to. I’m always referencing images from that film. OS: One of my favorite films is The Neon Demon, shot by Natasha Braier. This was the first film I can remember doing that with. I love rewatching movies with friends who haven’t seen them, especially knowing they will love it. I remember leaving the theater and thinking “I want to do that”. ND: I think seeing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in a theater as an eleven-year-old was pretty impactful. ![]() What film made you want to become a filmmaker? Loose is a huge fan of the app, we all freaked out when you posted about Poser. If someone is talking about a film I pull out my phone and add it. Ori Segev: I was late to the Letterboxd party, which Noah told me about years ago. We have a lot of fun reading the Poser reviews, but sometimes a review will cut deep and I have to take a little break. I remember we tried to get Ori and our other friends to make an account and nobody did at first. We knew it was cool before everyone else around us did. Noah Dixon: I joined Letterboxd with my producer Brett Reiter in 2014. And, do you cautiously navigate Poser’s page or do you dive right in? They must show a Certificate of Suitability number and a date of testing which is no more than 5 years old. Grid connected inverters sold in Australia need to be tested and compliant with Australian Standard AS 4777. There are a few things you should look for when choosing an inverter: Since most solar kits will be installed for you, this isn't likely to be too big a problem. Even if you’re only connecting your inverter to a battery, it's a good idea to get a licensed installer or electrician in to make sure everything's the way it should be. If you're connecting to the mains like most people, you will need a licensed electrician to do the job. The inverter will need to be connected up to both the array and either the mains power or a battery storage system. The inverter will need to be installed under cover - usually in a garage or carport - although it can be installed in the house if there's no other safe place to put it. with a modified sine wave, as mentioned earlier) which can be fine for appliances which don’t use a lot of power, but can be problematic for more heavy duty appliances, especially for anything motorised. Lesser quality inverters mimic the sine wave in steps rather than straight lines (i.e. The better quality the inverter, the more closely it will mimic the wave and the more efficiently it will regulate power. Inverters use a sample of the power supplied by the grid to ensure that the output is exactly in phase with the power supplied from the grid. In Australia the supply current switches at 50Hz, so the current is switched 50 times a second. The inverter uses either transistors or an oscillator to switch the voltage back and forth. For it to be usable, it needs to mimic the wave form of the AC power coming in from the grid (a sine wave). In simple terms, the DC electricity produced by a solar or turbine array has no wave to it it's a basic, direct flow of current. All of household appliances are designed to be used with an AC current, and this is where an inverter comes in. The reason for this is that AC current is considered to be slightly less likely to kill you if you happen to get an electric shock from the mains. The power that comes from your powerpoints is supplied in AC form, which means that the current alternates back and forth in a wave. A 'pure' sine wave is a smooth wave, whereas a modified sine wave is closer to a square wave (see image).Ī pure sine wave inverter will identically mimic the wave produced by the mains power grid, which will result in a much more efficient energy conversion - a little like the difference between looking at an extremely high resolution picture and an extremely low one. The difference between a pure sine wave inverter and one which produces a modified sine wave is the shape of the wave for the output current. They can also make a fairly loud humming noise, which can be irritating if the inverter's installed near a living area. ![]() ![]() Inverters with transformers are generally bigger and heavier, and are normally slightly less efficient than the more modern transformerless types that are appearing on the market. Most inverters sold in Australia include transformers, although inverters without transformers are becoming increasingly popular for a few reasons. If your inverter doesn't have a transformer, you'll need an external one. Inverters have two main variation points: whether or not they have a transformer, and the type of sine wave they produce (pure or modified).Ī transformer is the part which bumps up the voltage to 240V, which is required by all of your appliances, and which is the voltage at which power is supplied from the grid. What are DC to AC inverters?Ī DC to AC inverter (normally just called an 'inverter') takes the direct current (DC) power generated by a solar panel or wind turbine array and converts it to alternating current (AC) power, which can be used around the home or fed back into the grid to offset electricity consumption. The technology used in your inverter will affect its efficiency. ![]() ![]() “‘What if Movie is Bliss’s Own Life?’: The Symbolic Violence of the Movie in Ralph Ellison’s Unfinished Second Novel ‘Three Days Before the Shooting. “African American Literature and Psychoanalysis.” A Companion to African American Literature, ed. Griffith, declared influences Sergei Eisenstein, V.I. The article relates Ellison to non-literary figures such as filmmaker D.W. In his treatment of this constellation, furthermore, this article also shows, Ellison uses cinema and cinematicity to think about his more “overt” and widely recognized concerns, such as the intimate relation between memory and forgetting, the role of memory and forgetting within American historic consciousness, the way that “neglected” memories occasion “pain”, and the American Civil War. Having teased these things apart, it is possible to see how cinema per se forms part of a constellation alongside the pre-, post-, and paracinematic – a constellation that is itself one of Three Days’s major concerns. This article contends that these features of Three Days can best be understood by treating Ellison as a de facto theorist of what art historians and media theorists have recently called “cinematicity.” This term helps to tease apart technologies of cinema – projection, cinematography and so on – from more abstract principles these technologies help to enact (for instance, the mobilisation of “still” images into movement). It also seethes with cinematic metaphors and similes, binding those plot points to each other and helping to articulate the novel’s otherwise myriad intellectual concerns.
